I'm TWO!

Another birthday rolls by, and this time I was aware enough to enjoy it for that. I was woken up early in the morning to be wished, hugged, and given my gifts.

403026098_b3c4fa1d13.jpg

Seeing my enchantment with all things Dora, P-M arranged for a Dora theme for the party in the evening, and I was overjoyed with the balloons

the cake

403006148_5657446b63.jpg

and all the rest of it. We had a small gathering, but all my friends were there - Adhik, Pratik and Hemant, and of course Sonal and Amit uncles and Pooja and Mamta auntys. P-M had decided to give me a leg up by teaching me to blow candles to the tune of "Happy Birthday to You", and I put that to handy use. I had a whale of a time during all of it,

403005968_a322ba4e93.jpg

and even taught Adhik a few dance steps.

Back To The USA

After a long 4 months in India during which I chalked up quite a few miles shuttling between grandparents in Patna and Banaras, I am now back in the US. Papa was unsure about whether I would recognize him after such a long time away. He surprised me with lots of funky balloons. I surprised him with how much I had begun to talk.

Can't get you out of my head ...

From a precocious ear for music to an earworm. "Jhalak dikhla ja" marks the first song I've begun to hum. Himesh Reshammiya - now he's got the number for babies. That nasal voice - I'm sure he picked it up as a kid to annoy grownups. And lyrics like "aaja aaja aaja aaja" - pure kiddie bliss. Now that's what I call dance music!

Modesty is overrated!

As my vocabulary grows, I'm putting what I've learned to good use. For example, today I took a look at myself in the mirror and said "Handsome!".

On to Nanaji's

Dadiji was left alone today as we moved on to Banaras to visit Nanaji and Naniji. P-M will be leaving for Delhi tomorrow for their visas.

Banaras had a lot of surprises in store for me. First, from the station itself, I could see monkeys! And the house was practically beseiged. I could barely keep my eyes off. And the house itself was huge! You could fit two playgrounds in the living room! I spend the day running around everywhere. In between getting pampered by Nanaji and Naniji.

The Kishore Family Mouse

One of the enduring Kishore family traditions is the handkerchief mouse. Everyone in grandfather's generation seems to know how to coax a handerchief into a mouse shape and bring it to life with some amazing moves, and nobody in Papa's generation seems to have a clue how.

I find it wicked cool!

Bye Bye, Dadaji

Dadaji was bid farewell by all of us in the havan today.

There he is, gazing at us with a smiling countenance as he always does.

Dadaji, I will miss you very much.

Although we would have preferred to meet under much happier circumstances, I got to met cuz Rohan for the first time. He's already a handful, and the three Kishore brats are going to have quite a time!

Dadaji is no more

I woke up to see P-M really distraught. They explained to me that this morning, suddenly, Dadaji had decided to take his place among the stars in the heavens above. While I can't quite understand what they are talking about, I have this sinking feeling that I won't have him around to regale me with stories, teach me so many things, be my partner in crime.

We're leaving for India today, the three of us. Bade Papa is also leaving. We'll all assemble in Patna.

Dadaji, I'll watch for you among the stars.

Zoo Whoo!

P-M finally decided I was old enough to enjoy a visit to the zoo, and took me to the Oakland Zoo today. It was completely fascinating. Birdies of all colors and feathers. Doggies of all sizes, from little ones to huge maned ones to gigantic ones with trunks. Although they did not seem to be doing much, just sitting around and lazing.

But even more fun than the birdies and doggies was the other stuff. This frog proved a tough climb, but I immediately knew what to do with the hollowed tortoise shell. And then there was the sky ride, the railroad car, and the best part of the day for me, the carousel!

218251925_d8fabd7d8c.jpg

And then there was this enclosure with the very tall doggies and short ones.

A Birthday and a Half in the Jungle

Today I turned One and a Half years. Papa despairs that I still am not picking up as many words as he would like. But as I say, show me the cost-benefit analysis.

215771400_ce98440e8f.jpg

After I cut this half a cake for half a birthday, Papa-Mummy took me to The Jungle, which is like a huge playplace. Gobs of balls, carousels and jumping castles. And lots of tunnels and mazes. Actually much of it was quite scary, so I kept to the tot section, and promptly lost myself in the balls.

218251894_6bfcc8a56c.jpg

I also took the carousel around for a whirl.

Mom's a Grad (Dad's just a Dad)

After a long and difficult 5 years, including a hiatus that she took to welcome me into the world, Mummy completed her post-baccalaureate degree and graduated today. The graduation ceremony was a huge affair, held at the Spartan Stadium with over 8000 new grads.

Arora uncle, Sonal uncle and Rajesh uncle and family all attended the graduation ceremony to congratulate Mummy on this milestone.

218251937_00e7d74c8f.jpg

I'm proud of my Mummy. With all the distractions and tribulations that she had over the years, cute and otherwise, she still managed a quite high GPA.

Contented Consumption

As Mummy heads into the home stretch of her Bachelor's degree, she's caught up with her studies. That leaves me more and more often in the care of Papa. I'm not complaining, because that usually means more trips to the park, ice creams and other goodies Mummy would deem too hot or junky for me.

I had my offical baptism into the cult of junk food today with my first Happy Meal at McDonald's, a 6 pc Chicken McNuggets. And bagged my first Happy Meal trophy, Curious George!

Of course, real contentment is in feeding yourself, and I insist on it these days.

What they don't realize is just how much of a mouthful even simple words can be.

Almost Holi

Holi is around the corner, and by now I'm old enough to know what that means - food, of course! Mummy is wrought with her studies, and in fact has an exam the day after, but still she took time out to cook up some niceties, like chicken, puas, pulao, kachauris and stuff. That she managed to do so was thanks in large part to my invaluable help.

The downside is that all the cooking left me dog tired, so when Papa proceeded to go to bed, I just leaned over him and nodded off.

Snow Day in the South Bay?

The weather has been unusually cold and rainy lately, leading to some wonderfully strange sights - like snowfall in San Francisco and many places around the Bay Area! -Sadly, though, none of it fell in Santa Clara.

We ventured out for a morning look. Mummy is sunny like the skies behind her, and the hilltops in the background are all crowned with freshly fallen snow. Crazy, indeed!

San Diego

105004671_1e7da313b3.jpg

That might be so, but thankfully there's more to San Diego. This year marks the fifth anniversary of Papa-Mummy's marriage. To celebrate, we went down to San Diego for the weekend.

The way it was raining on the way in, it was beginning to look like deja vu all over again. Thankfully, the rains had relented by the time we got there, and the next day was nice.

105004655_006ca43832.jpg

Mummy had this thing for visiting the border of the USA. So come morning we drove down to the US-Mexico border. To me it looked like Tully Road with even more cars, but Mummy was happy.

105004663_659bc07fe5.jpg

San Diego is among the older towns this side of the continent, and the Old Town is maintained in the vintage way. Cowboy country in the middle of the city.

105004680_eef960cf72.jpg

After a lazy first day, on Sunday - the day of the anniversary - we went to the Sea World. Man, I had never imagined Shamu was this big, nor how he managed those somersaults that I have been trying so long to execute! And with that goofy grin of his, he and his friends were immediate hits.

105004688_fb695e00ea.jpg

But the dolphins were even better. Playfulness - now isn't that among the best uses of mammalian intelligence?

105004707_4631badd26.jpg

Mascots tend to be really eager for celeb fanshots with me, and sometimes when Papa-Mummy are in a good mood, they tend to give in to those requests. So here's the obligatory photo-op.

105004725_b6c538e5e3.jpg

We drove back the next morning, but not before visiting this beach near the La Jolla Cove. I again surprised Papa-Mummy by yelling "Birdie!" (the first time I had uttered that word) as soon as I was set down and chasing the seagulls.

A nice trip, and Papa-Mummy were quite relieved that I didn't puke any more.

My First Laptop

My agents tell me that it's hip to be seen with a laptop. I was not so hopeful however of getting Papa-Mummy to see the point, so I kept contending for time with them whenever they brought out theirs.

Well, well, well, looks like Papa got tired of me trying to push away his hands from the laptop and banging away at the keys! He got me a laptop of my own. And what baby specs it has - a full 600 MB hard disk with a 33 MHz processor running the DOS operating system. But it does have a nice "thump" to it when I bang the keys.

TV has always transfixed me, but I'm beginning to grow beyond the simple hypnotism of the shiny tube. I'm beginning to develop a sense of humor Dying from the heat.! Today, for the first time, watching Pingu on the TV, their on-screen antics made me burst out laughing!

I'm also beginning to dance my wicked dance to the songs they play on Barney and Friends.

It's all downhill from here

Now that the rains have subsided and lovely spring is in the air, Papa-Mummy have been taking me to the park regularly. Like a celebrity spectator at a big-ticket game, I had been circumspect in my visits to the park until now, but now I've decided to let my hair down. Put me on the swing now, and watch me squeal with laughter.

Within a week, I've gone from being corralled down the slides, to finding my own way down.

96184144_881af9ed8c.jpg

It's a bit unorthodox, but then you know me, and it's actually quite fun.

My first word

There's only so much a kid can do with gestures, shouts and helpful parents. Sometime you gotta put your mouth where the money is.

Papa-Mummy were quite amused to find that my first word, apart from "pa-pa", "ma-ma", "da-da" and the like, was "baby" (as in the self-pitying "oh, baby!"). But given how often they're wont to say it, would you be surprised? Besides, I gotta endorse my weblog.

And when agitated, I go "idli-idli". It's fun to see the various theories floating around to explain that - Mummy's I'm a South Indian at heart, to Dadaji's I'm a yodeller at heart.

Car Seat Potato

After a year of cradling me in my escapades, the trusty old rear-facing car seat had to be replaced as I was outgrowing it. About time, for I was about to go nuts from all the gazing at the patterns on the rear seat cover.

105048135_073a8461a4.jpg

Papa put the new one in and brought in the old one and put it down in the living room. So the next time I came ambling into the living room, I saw my old companion and promptly climbed in to seat myself and watched the television.

For some reason, Papa-Mummy were rather amused.

Happy New Year!

Astute readers of this blog will know that vacations and us Kishores don't mix very well. But being the gluttons for punishment that we are, we had planned on a trip to Tahoe and Reno for the new year vacation, so that we could frolic in the snow, and watch the firworks at Reno bring in the new year.

Things didn't begin too well when the forecast said rain pretty much every day of the week. Sure enough, we had rain all the way in. But we did get to Reno roughly in time on the 30th, where we were joined by Sonal Uncle and Mamta Aunty.

In the evening, we first made for the Hilton next door. We took tickets for a standup comedy routine. That inspired me for some standup yelling of my own, and off Papa marched me from the theater. Poor Papa and Mummy had to take turns watching the show and looking after me.

Then we made a beeline for Mummy's favorite Circus Circus Casino. I won my first ever arcade trophy when I scored this plush puppy at a shoot-the-balloon game together with Papa.

81398690_ebf3924a7d.jpg

More bad news the next morning. It had rained through the night, and there was talk of Reno flooding. The rains had been very heavy, and cities thoughout north California and Nevada had been flooded. In Reno itself, streets were closed off and, more gloomily, the fireworks at night were called off.

After a hearty brekker at IHOP, we went againt to Circus Circus for even more arcade games. Papa got me to try out this penny ride for the first time. I liked it a lot, but by the fourth time or so it was getting a bit old.

81398739_210b32b6c9.jpg

The new year exuberance was beginning to take hold, and Mummy and Mamta Aunty got their faces painted.

81398577_75ebbe8500.jpg

Which I found a little scary, if you ask me.

81398760_4b4adcde75.jpg

It rained or dribbled pretty much throughout the day. In the night we went first to the Peppermill casino. The inside was really a sight to behold.

81398588_4b46c2b843.jpg

Next stop, Atlantis casino, and these party hats and even more arcadia.

81398601_2fa4d4cf38.jpg

Then, in a fit of irrational exuberance, the grownups decided that 45 minutes was time enough to load me up on milk, dash to the other side of town, make it to the Silver Legacy casino and watch the laser fireworks show there. Of course, by the time we got there, the streets were packed and the clock was ticking dangerously close to 12.

We tried for Circus Circus instead, but it didn't strike us to call the valet to park, and to our dismay, the parking lot was full too, and trying to find an empty slot burned up the remaining minutes to the new year.

Rather ungloriously, our new year was spent on the roof of the Parking structure at Circus Circus.

81398610_3040f9670e.jpg

But hey, nobody accused us Kishores of being short on enthusiasm. Here's us back at the hotel.

81398629_32be508095.jpg

We had planned to go back the next day via South Lake Tahoe and play a bit in the snow there. But while the day dawned clear, the rains had taken their toll, and highways I-80 and I-395 were both closed down with mudslides and flooding. As another storm had been forecast, we decided to return via North Lake Tahoe.

Pretty soon in the mountains it started snowing. It was slow going, but the snowfall was very beautiful. The snow had really piled up, and everything was a huge sheet of white.

81398642_ce1ddcf93e.jpg

We made a short stop at Mt. Rose en route.

81398650_69d83cb200.jpg

The snow made for some really beautiful scenes.

81398658_e80dbd80de.jpg

It really looked like a desert of white!

81398674_3328c5970a.jpg

Snow then gave way to rain, and it rained all the way back. I was getting indignant at the long drive and puked a few times to show my displeasure. Which irked Mummy even more, and there was some resolution-breaking yelling going around. It finally took all of 12 hours to get back home.

I can't wait to see what unfolds on our next vacation!
